ZigBee

From Embedded Channels

(Redirected from Zigbee)

Built on top of the IEEE 802.15 radio standard, ZigBee is a standard RF networking protocol backed by a nonprofit industry consortium of more than 250 OEMs, semiconductor manufacturers, technology providers, and end users including some of the biggest names in technology. Just as Wi-Fi (802.11), its IEEE cousin, ensures interoperability among different vendors' wireless LAN products, ZigBee aims to bring the same standardization and multi-vendor interoperability to device-to-device automation networks. Fast and Affordable Implementation of Wireless LAN Solutions with the IPC@CHIP® from Beck (+)

      Features:

      • Pohlheim, November 7, 2006 – Ethernet has largely become well-established in the industrial environment. However, there are still many applications that cannot be implemented with Ethernet, such as mobile systems or spatially separated stations in large machine halls or in the open field.
      • In these cases Wireless LAN technology (or WLAN for short) is ideal as a replacement for Ethernet since the TCP/IP protocol used enables the transparent transition from Ethernet to Wireless LAN Ethernet without having to convert the protocols. The latest encryption and authentication protocols offer at the same time satisfactory protection against unauthorised access. Depending on the environment, Wireless LAN can be used to cover distances between 50 and 300 metres and even more by using special antennas.
      • Beck's new WL01 Wireless LAN module provides the IPC@CHIP® Controller SC123 / SC143 with a fully-fledged Wireless LAN interface and enables both Infrastructure-Mode on an existing access point as well as Adhoc-Mode between several WL01 modules. The Beck IPC module is available from November 2006.

      • The connection of the separate and space-saving 23 x 36 x 5 mm add-on module to the IPC@CHIP® is implemented serially via an SPI interface with a maximum transfer rate of 48 MHz. The module supports the latest transmission standards 802.11b and g (11 and 54 Mbit/s in the 2.4 GHz range), as well as the security standards in compliance with 802.11i (WEP and WPA), and offers two antenna terminals for optimising reception and transmission.
      • An FK61-WL01 Development Kit will be offered for users to develop their own Wireless LAN solutions inexpensively and quickly. As well as the WLAN module and an adapter board for the existing DK61 IPC@CHIP® Development Kit, it also contains all the software libraries required, the documentation and a demo implementation with web configurator. • Sierra Wireless  (1)
    • MC8780 embedded mod
Fujitsu Siemens Computers has selected the new Sierra Wireless MC8780 embedded module for integration into the newly launched LIFEBOOK P7230 professional notebook. (+)

      Features:

      • The Sierra Wireless MC8780 embedded module offers faster download speeds than previous models, with peak data rates of up to 7.2 megabits per second (Mbps). In addition, it is the first Sierra Wireless module designed for HSUPA networks, with uplink speeds more than five times faster than those available on current networks – up to 2 Mbps. The faster uplink speed is particularly important for customers who routinely send large files over the wireless network while mobile.
      • The LIFEBOOK P7230 is the first in the product line to migrate to the Sierra Wireless HSUPA module and is expected to begin commercial shipments in Europe this summer.
      • “Embedded UMTS enables easy data access whenever and wherever the users are. To optimize the benefits that embedded UMTS brings, speed is an integral part. The improvements to data speed and uplink provided by HSUPA technology are therefore another important step,” said Andreas Thimmel, Senior Vice President Volume Business at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “We want the LIFEBOOK P7230 to offer the best possible mobile user experience, and collaborating with Sierra Wireless to integrate the latest in mobile broadband technology is a key part of delivering true mobility.”
